Athletics College

For those just getting out of high school and ready to embark on a career in sports the next four years of their lives might be the most crucial.  It will mean a dedication they may never have been demonstrated before, or refining a natural talent they already possess. It will define their future- personal and professional.

Choosing a college will be important for the prospect, possibly something he has thought through on his own or in a joint effort with his family.  He will, up to this point, have worked hard to meet the requirements of the college, and if he has carefully planned, will be able to meet the needs of the college team for assured acceptance.

If, by chance, his talent is such that a college has offered him a scholarship (this can be full or partial), or his coach has recommended him for one based on outstanding performance or potential, he then has the added responsibility of maintaining a certain grade average.  This, most often, goes along with a scholarship agreement for either partial or full financial support of the student/athlete.

Many college athletes bring more than talent as they come on board.  They bring with them vitality, determination and tenacity which are all great attributes.  They say something for the college that is positive and colleges use it to their advantage. So, if you are at this crossroad, make the most of all efforts to attain your desired goal.

As you approach the latter years of high school (though many begin much earlier) begin a profile on yourself.  Ask your high school coach for help, or input, as college coaches receive hundreds of profiles every year and yours needs to catch his eye!  As the year comes to a close, they will begin to pay closer attention to the profiles, and if something catches their attention, they may send someone to watch you play.

Remember, Sports school coaches will be interested in more than just your sports talent.  They are also looking for good representatives for the college.  They will want to see good academic achievement also.  Include such information, as well.  You will want to send this information to dozens of college choices.  If there are one or two colleges that you would prefer to attend play more attention to the profiles going to them.

Get references from all of those around you-those that can attest to you sports ability, those who can attest to your academic skills and those who can vouch for your team efforts and spirit.
